Values in Action
In this issue, AITF continues to highlight the critical role anchor institutions play in their communities, especially in times of adversity. With many institutions facing budget constraints, it is more important than ever to reinforce commitments to place-based collaboration, democratic practice, and social equity. Across the country, members are demonstrating resilience and innovation by embedding these principles into cross-sector partnerships and local civic efforts.
Member Spotlight: Ogden Civic Action Network
This month’s Member Spotlight features the Ogden Civic Action Network (OgdenCAN), a multi-institutional cross-sector collaboration in northern Utah. Founded in 2016 through a partnership between Weber State University and Ogden City, OgdenCAN has become a vital hub for addressing local challenges in health, education, the built environment, economic stability, and social fabric.
With eight anchor institutions and nine nonprofit partners, OgdenCAN operates under a collective impact model that ensures shared leadership, financial commitment, and resident engagement. The Community Leaders Network, OgdenCAN’s flagship fellowship programme, exemplifies this approach by equipping neighbourhood residents with skills in design thinking and community organising to lead local change initiatives.
OgdenCAN’s work showcases what it means to truly embed anchor values in practice — aligning institutional resources with community priorities to build trust, shared ownership, and long-term impact.
